Artist's Comments

As I crossed the train lines I saw this old man with his dog ambling along. I just got across in time and the warning lights came on as I reached the other side. The poor man was forced to wait. I turned back just to see the train flashing by. Without hesitation or adjustment I raised my camera and shot. The end of the train whipped by quickly after.
This is the most spontaneous and quick footed photograph I have ever taken!
I like the 'crossing' sign visible through the train window.

Canon eos 300
Fuji Superia 200 (bit grainier than than the kodak)
Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8-4

[unsure of actual settings, I think I threw it out to 28mm last second to get the dog]

nb. this was taken on my new lens, £17 on ebay! Results have been very touch and go, may of just been conditions I was shooting in. It really does lack sharpness though.

Way cool and the noise only amplifies the emotion of speed =)

The world is not enough,
But it is such a perfect place to start.
And if you're strong enough,
Together, we can take the world apart.

Thank you very much :D
That is the beauty of film :)

It's good, it could be better. The lens really does lack sharpness on your subject, that being the dog and man, which is a disappointment. However, I do like the repeating colour of orange from the train to the dog since it adds to the composition of the image. I would prefer to see a different crop though, so that the pinwheel thing on the fence is gone, and maybe the bit of blank where the train isn't on the other side is gone, to really focus in more on what you want the viewer to see.

As for the fence... it confuses me. I know it's not something you can change... but it's confusing. Where does he cross at?

Yeah, as I said, lens is slightly disappointing, but was partly due to overcast/rainy conditions.
I did try a tighter crop, I just prefer the space of this version.
If you focus hard, you can see the pathway across the tracks on the very left, under the train, there is a gate through the fence just off the image :)
thank you for your kind words :D

The rain would be why it looks like a slight grain is in the image.
Overcast though... not so much. That's actually really good for softening outdoor light to be more workable and pretty. I think the lens just leaves a little to be desired. You'll get the hang of it eventually.
You're welcome. I still don't see the gap... but I don't know the area either. x'D
